We finished our final product After weeks and weeks and 12 consecutive hours in your room on Saturday we’re finally done! My fingers still hurt from soldering all those LED’s in wires. We seriously did like 10000000 connections (and they look neat/organized on the back of the board). But at least I got caught up on Glee and Grey’s Anatomy Today in class Doc helped us connect our last jellyfish (he accidently pulled everything out!) and tonight we’re going to get power adapters for the other two jellyfish.

Two jellyfish turn on by pressing buttons and the last one is a motion sensor. Our mural is a beauty and everyone is going to love it.

: This is me being COMPELTELY frustrated with this STUPID jellyfish that refused to light up. But we got it Mrs. Chen (with help from Doc!)

Tonight we need to do our reimbursement form and work on our final presentation outline. Since I’m leaving on a trip wednesday night, we need to figure out how we’re going to do this. 14 more days of school! BYEEEEEE blogging

Okay NOWWWWW it’s CHRISTINA taking over jah blog Errrrrrr so basically Lumi covered it all, I’m working on the form as we speak….. BUT I LOST A RECEIPT MRS. CHEN CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THAT!?!?!?!!!??!?!? :(:(:(:(:(:( It was worth almost, if not more than $30 !!!!!!! Anywho. The three of us will begin the presentation this week, but once Lumi leaves it’s up to Kelc and I. We’re also starting our THIRTY PAGE PAPER (OF FLUFF). Jaaaaahst kidding, kind of. Now that the project is FINALLY done, cause I was your room till 4:15 finishing it (aren’t you glad I let you leave at 4:30!? ), we can focus on the presentation and jah paper. Shouldn’t be too hard, at least, not as hard as the project itself

OH and also, Mr. Heyler visited class today and told us how impressed he was with our work That was extremely nice of him and it made me feel very good, THANK YOU MR. HEYLER!! He also generously offered to make us a WOODEN support system for our mural, in his own free time! Although I told him he didn’t have to, he insisted and we are EXTREMELY grateful Thank you so much!!!!!

Today was a great day, our project is almost finished and we are very satisfied.

Today we stuck all the lights into our board in a color pattern of red, green yellow, white and so on. Christina bought some resistors during her free period from Radio Shack but bought two different types. We did however have two packs (5 in each) of the resistors that we did need. With those resistors we saudered it to the long end of the LED. This weekend we are going to work on the project and finish all the connections. Christina and Lumi are going Saturday morning and I will try to come later because I have States. Hopefully we can finish by Monday. Thanks again for the extension!

Christina wasn’t in class today due to the AP English exam, so me and Kelcie got to work. We attempted to figure out the wiring, and we got started and will continue tomorrow. We also realized that we need a power source that plugs into the wall to power the entire thing; Doc says it’ll cost around $20, and this should be the last thing we need to buy. We decided that we will use 3 arduinos for our 3 main jellyfish, and it should work out real nicely. All the LEDs are in place and ready for soldering. Keldie and I started to solder, but then we realized it will be easier in the long run if we solder with the LEDs already in the board, so we’ll work on that tomorrow. We’ll get the power source sometime this weekend and test it our on Monday. Almost there!

So we’re actually making progress everyday on our invention. Today we officially finished painting our mural (we finished most of it after school yesterday) and it looks super good. Since we bought the 6 packs of LED lights yesterday, now we just have to work on sodering all of them. The hard part is that we need to know exactly where on the board we’re going to put the LED’s so that we know if we need to soder wires onto the LED’s to make them connect. We’re using Doc’s drill to drill holes into the board (where the LED’s will fit) and hopefully we can finish this part in class tomorrow. Since we pretty much already know how to use the arduino, once we finish all the sodering, we can connect the wires to the breadboard and were done. It’s not hard, but takes a lot of time to do. Thank you again for understanding our situation and giving us an extension till monday.

This is the prices we have used so far (hope we get reimbursed)

-LEDs (about $26)

-Blue paint (about $19)

-Wires (we need to buy a roll for Doc)

-Resistors (we need to get these asap as well)

UPDATE at 7:59 pm

After school Christina and I drilled all the holes on the jellyfish so that tomorrow we can just soder. We only made holes in the tentacles (doing it by portions) because we don’t know if we have enough LEDs right now to fit around the jellyfish.

First of all… THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE EXTENSION!!!

You’re the best!!!!!!!!!!

Today was a very productive!!!

We started painting period 8 in the lower school art room and we finished it up together after school. We also got all the LED lights we need (120 lights) and are ready to begin the next step which is to sauder all the wires. We are going to try our best to sauder before friday so we can start inserting them into the board this weekend (at the latest). Doc also said that we might need to hot glue gun the LED lights into the board so that when kids touch the board they won’t pop out. We really need to focus these next few days to get all of the saudering done because we can only do it in school. Thank you so much for being so understanding we really really really are very thankful!

The final invention is due on friday! I can’t believe how quick it came. Since we did our mini presentations in class today, you kind of know where we are standing right now. There is a lottttttttttt of work to be done this week. Alongside AP’s, water polo states, dance showcase, and other homework we need to spend every second finishing up our project. Today after school Christina is going to buy blue paint at this store on ward (Mrs. Keefer, the lower school art teacher buys all her materials there and gets discount) so we can paint our mural (hopefully finish it by tomorrow after school) and Kelcie is going to buy the LEDs (24 in a pack). The main thing right now is to soder all 80-100 LEDs and wire them together. Kelcie and I talked to Doc today during period 8 and he said that we should probably use three different arduino’s for the three different jellyfish just so that they can come on/off at the same time or function in different patterns.

Sunday, May 2- Weekend Post

Hope you had an amazing weekend, Mrs. Chen!

Today, the three of us took a field trip to Radioshack to check out some LEDs. Turns out normal red blue or green LEDs costs almost $3 for 2…… seeing as though we need more or less 150 of these, this does not seem like a good deal. We were also unsure if we’d be reimbursed; we heard the business guy has rejected some ideas already, and we weren’t sure if he’d go for ours.

Instead, we took down prices of some specific LEDs and we will double check (with you or with business guy) if we will be reimbursed tomorrow. If so, we’re going to go to Ala Moana during our frees (early this week) and make our purchases. We also need to adventure to the art supply place to buy a gallon of paint, too. Completely doable, so we’re looking alright.

We also found some funky LEDs with 7 different blinking colors, or all 3 primary colors in one, stuff like that. We’re not completely sure if we’re going to invest in those, though, cause if we don’t know how to program it to change into colors that aren’t red blue or green, they’re pretty pointless. Tomorrow we’re gonna ask Doc if he knows how to do that.

After our Radioshack adventure, we went to an amazing candystore and then enjoyed a wonderful lunch from Panda Express in the food court.

This week we will begin painting our mural and soldering wires to LEDs. Considering we have a lot of soldering to accomplish, we are going to come during all of our frees and after school time in order to get it finished within 1-2 days. Hopefully by Friday we’ll have something to show!

Hello again!

Soooooo a lot has happened since we finished blogging yesterday. As Lumi said, we soldered the wires to the button, and I’m posting the pictures on this blog. We also learned new timing codes and started messing around with those. And today, Doc helped to get the button working.

We set it up so when you press the button, the lights go on and off in a row, and repeats 4 times. I’m not sure if that makes too much sense, but you know what I’m talking about cause you saw it, I think.

Anyway, that was a big accomplishment, and it was relatively easy to follow. I think the three of us can set it up ourselves tomorrow! Lumi and Kelcie also worked on drafting our mural, which is looking very good so far if I do say so myself Our plan is really moving along well, we owe a lot to Doc, and we’re all getting excited!

Doc also introduced us to a motion-sensor switch than turns the lights on using infrared technology. He explained how it measures the infrared field around the sensor and detects when it

changes, switching the lights on just like a regular button. It also connects like a regular button, which we already no how to hook up, so this is just splendid! This is a new and REALLY exciting idea that we’re gonna start taking hold of!

Hello Mrs. Chen,

Exactly how many people are doing arduinos?????????

I’m still pretty angry that FISHER people gave away our box, but me and kelcie are going to ask the dance teachers if we could have their box (this is how I got the idea to check FISHER in the first place). So right now we are still learning about arduinos and trying out different codes to turn on the led lights at different times. I think we got the hang of it already but now we need to work on how were going to construct them on the back of the mural and the “interactive” part. For the interactive part, Doc gave us a little button that we need to hook up to the input part of the arduino board. When someone pushes the button, the lights will go on in any pattern we want. Before we start building this circuit, we need to soder wires on the bottom part so we can insert it into the circuit.

Doc helped us soder the wires with this melter thing. We heated some wire and melted it onto the button. Once we figure out the program, the button will work. We still need to play with it so more elaboration tomorrow!

Today was very successful. Doc is such a great help! We eliminated all the wires and connected the circuit so that it was more organized and in a straight line rather than all over the bread board in different positions. We played around with the timing of the lights and learned how to do it in any pattern we want.

We are concerned because the other group is also doing aurduino’s and we feel as though we may need more aspects of physics if they are doing the same topic. We only have aurduino’s as our main topic and they are also going to be doing it with another part of physics. What should we do?
